Starting A Business

How to find your niche

Simply put your goal as an entrepreneur is to solve a problem for a specific group of people as quickly as possible. Repeat it over and over, help more people and keep growing.

As you go along you will find ways to optimize your business, to get more customers, to build a team, to become more efficient and more profitable.

How To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the possibilities. If you’re just starting a business, what industry do you go into? What products and/or services do you sell? How do you get customers/clients?

If you’re already in business, you may feel overwhelmed by social media, by AI/new technology, by all the potential ways to market your business, by the new products or services you could offer, by the accounting, financial, legal, operational or other aspects of your business.

You need focus. Even with all the noise, the feeling of so much to do, you need to ask yourself these questions.

  1. Who is my ideal customer?

  2. How can I better serve them?

Your business is flexible and can change. If you choose one problem to solve for one type of customer, you can change your business to be optimized around that from how you market because you know who to target and the main problem they are facing and you’re selling the solution. This also helps your internal operations because you can build systems and coordinate people and other companies you work with to optimize how you help your target market.

What about people who don’t exactly match your target market? They will still buy from you and they’ll appreciate your clarity in how you communicate your solution to their problem in your marketing.

When you’re able to clearly define your market and your solution to your market’s problems it’s like selling ice cold water in the middle of the desert on a hot summer day. Your customer might normally prefer seltzer or sparkling water or soda but if you’re the only solution and they’re thirsty enough, they will happily overpay for your water.

Most new and established business owners have difficulty defining their target market and the problem(s) they are solving for them.

First, not all problems are tangible or obvious. It’s easier to define your target market and the problem(s) you solve if you help other businesses make more money or if you help repair brick walls or something similar. Sometimes a business is selling access to a community or a fun experience and people are willing to pay for it and yes it is still solving a problem for a group of people. You just have to ask why are customers buying this and get to the real problems you are solving. A fancy restaurant might be solving a problem of where to take a first date or where to go to impress a potential client.

Start by answering these two questions:

  1. Who is my ideal customer?

  2. How can I better serve them?
