Why Email?

Email should be central to your business. Here's why and how.

Email should be central to your business because it helps you communicate with and build a relationship with your target market. People buy from those they know, like, and trust.

What if I just want to sell products, why does this matter?

The goal of your business is to help your target market solve a main problem (and probably several smaller problems along the way). Take your customers on a journey where your customer uses your product/service and is transformed in some way.

Your focus should be your target market, their problems and how you or your product or service can be their guide or coach along the way. Your customer is the hero. Your product is the roadmap. You need to define both your target market and the products/services you are selling.

If you have a product/service already, figure out the best target market for your products and start speaking to this target market.

If you have a target market already, even better. Figure out how to help them with products and services either your own products and services or products and services from other businesses who pay you to sell theirs.

You need both pieces, if you have one already, find the other. If you’re just starting out and need ideas, choose a target market first.

If you still aren’t seeing the connection, keep reading…

You might be thinking this doesn’t apply to you. What if I record music and sell albums online? What if I sell art? What problem am I solving? Who’s my target market?

Usually problems fall under the categories health, relationships and/or money. Maybe if you’re a painter you’re helping someone with their relationship because your artwork is the perfect birthday or holiday gift for their significant other. If you record music, think about the community of fans and how fans can meet other fans at concerts, online, through walking down the street wearing your gear, maybe you’re helping your target audience make friends and bond with others over a shared song of yours. The target audience, problems, and value of your products/services are still there. If you’re struggling to find them, talk to your fans. Talk to your customers. Ask them why they bought from you. What do they like about your music? Do they buy from you for themselves or as a gift for someone else?

Who out of your target market do you help?

Your target market is in different stages. Some people are new to this problem your products/services solve and haven’t tried doing anything to solve their problem and others have suffered for years and tried everything. Some people are willing to spend little to no money to solve it and others are willing to pay thousands or more to solve it.

If you target the people willing to pay more and you provide them a better and higher quality solution, by charging each person more money you have more money to pay for advertising and you have more of a budget to work with them and help them in more meaningful ways. I would target this segment first.

If you however already have a large audience or someone with an audience willing to promote you and you’re going for more customers, you could go for people who are willing to pay a moderate amount for a solution.

I would not suggest targeting the people willing to pay the least for a solution the bargain hunters who will try to pay as little as possible. It’s difficult to be profitable helping those who pay the least.

Knowing about market segments though…

You might be thinking… “What if there was a way to gather my entire target market together and show them how my products and services help solve their problems?

The ones who can afford to buy my products and services buy them, others can wait, save up, buy lower priced pre-packaged offerings first and/or be referred to other companies to buy their products.

How can this be accomplished?

It can be accomplished through an email list. You can gather your entire target market together and build a relationship with them so you’re top of mind when they’re ready to finally solve the problem your company helps solve.

We’ve worked with dozens of newsletter platforms and recommend and use BeeHiiv instead of any other platform.

The main reason is as of now they don’t charge until you either reach 2,500 subscribers or when you use their monetization features.

When you are ready to monetize your newsletter, they are hands down the best at newsletter monetization. The two main methods of newsletter monetization they support are:

  1. referring your audience to other newsletters and getting paid per subscriber you refer

  2. getting paid to place ads in your newsletter
